First Skirts, Now Paintings: Dior Faces More Copycat Accusations In China

Update published August 4, 2022

Dior is facing cultural appropriation accusations in China once again. Its Fall 2022 products featuring what the house calls “Jardin d’Hiver” patterns have been called out by netizens for copying traditional Chinese painting styles. According to the product description on Dior’s official website, the collection is “a poetic and exotic representation of Monsieur Dior’s wall murals.”

Following the recent scandal over the plagiarism of traditional Chinese horse face skirts — to which the French luxury titan has yet to issue a formal response — this latest controversy further bruises Dior’s image in the mainland. The hashtag #NewDiorProductsAllegedlyCopyingChineseFlowerandBirdPatterns currently has 3.5 million views on Weibo. But worse than that, angered users are rushing to comment under Dior’s newest posts on the platform as well as Instagram asking the brand to apologize.

Strong sentiment for traditional Chinese wear has even manifested offline. Amid the ongoing backlash against Dior’s horse face skirt, around 50 Chinese students protested outside of the Paris Dior store in July, with the Weibo hashtag #ChineseStudentsinParisProtestAgainstDiorCulturalAppropriation gathering over 440 million cumulative views.

Clearly, keeping silent and trying to go unnoticed isn’t working well for the house.

Published July 18, 2022

What Happened: Dior’s latest drop has caught the attention of Chinese netizens — for all the wrong reasons. Over the weekend, the French luxury house was accused of cultural appropriation by netizens and official media outlets such as Global Times and People’s Daily for launching a mid-length pleated skirt in its Fall 2022 collection that mimics the design of a traditional Chinese horse face skirt.

Horse face skirt, or mǎmiànqún in Mandarin, is a Chinese garment that dates back to the Song dynasty. It

Andrew Gentleman owns Clean4Me on South Street and has worked in the cleaning industry in Moray for over 20 years.

However, recently he has expanded the business to sell vintage designer clothes as well with his new venture ‘Pretty New Clothing’ – inspired by former Oasis star Liam Gallagher’s own clothing label ‘Pretty Green’.

Andrew says that the expansion came about “naturally” and that it was time to “try something new” after more than two decades working in the cleaning industry.

“We used to clean a lot of Forces uniforms so what would happen is people would see them and tell us how smart they looked,” he said.

“Off the back of that I bought in a few uniforms just to display at first.

“From there it just kind of went from uniforms to vintage uniforms and then vintage clothing and nearly new clothing.

“That’s really how it all came together.”

Like many business owners in Moray, Andrew struggled to cope with the consequences of the coronavirus pandemic.

However, his recent expansion into selling clothes alongside his cleaning business points towards a brighter future.

“Obviously it was a worrying time for us,” he said.

“It was quite scary actually, as it was for a lot of businesses, but we’ve rode the storm.

“I’ve thought about doing this for a while so I’m glad that I’ve finally done it.

“I’ve had a great response so far and the laundrette side of the business is always busy so I’m hopeful

A need for speed: When Dior met Gran Turismo

tainment – the digital Dior assets include a racing suit and customised, cream-coloured De Tomaso Mangusta, an Italian sports car manufactured between 1967 and 1971.

These in-game items feature the Dior oblique motifs, ‘CD’ diamond initials, and a  “Christian Dior Atelier Avenue Montaigne” patch in a style similar to what you would have seen in the ’60s and ’70s. The cream-coloured sports car exterior features the number “47”, as a tribute to 1947.

The in-game digital avatar skin has been designed by Dior men’s artistic director Kim Jones. It consists of a yellow and grey racing suit, matching gloves, reinterpreted Diorizon shoes, and blue and grey helmet.

From 25 August, Gran Turismo 7 players will be able to apply the new and exclusive racing gear to their driver avatar in the game.

Inspirations for the designs were drawn from the glamourous Dior perfume adverts from the ’60s through the ’80s, which conveyed a luxurious lifestyle. During this era, high-end perfume brands sponsored famous car races, such as the Dakar Rally and the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

This collaboration is vastly different to when other premium brands have made in-game skins for AAA games or created their own digital games and mini-games on platforms such as Roblox. The high-definition graphics and realistic look of Dior’s racing gear showcase a more elevated style that appeals to a Gran Turismo audience that has a love of luxury sports cars both modern and vintage.

It might not be Dior’s usual style to design a racing suit and customise a sports car; however, the result is a highly sophisticated ensemble and sports car fit for real-life races. It makes you wonder why it has taken so long for games to take fashion seriously.

Since 1980 Mountain Supply has been outfitting mountaineers, backcountry skiers, backpackers and climbers with the gear and expertise they need for their outdoor adventures. “Our knowledgeable staff is really what sets us apart,” said Kevin Ganey, the general manager of Mountain Supply. “Not only do we have a little bit more of a specialized gear and a curated assortment within some of the best brands in the industry, but a wide selection of those brands as well. And really, our people and our staff really round out that in terms of being able to provide that amazing customer service, and maybe a little level of detail that you’re not going to get from the bigger box stores.”

Those bigger box stores are surprisingly welcome competition to Ganey, who said the larger retail stores are usually the first step people take to the outdoors. As they continue and seek higher quality gear, they’ll eventually find their way to specialty retail stores like Mountain Supply.

“I think that we still maybe wouldn’t exist without some of those bigger stores that help bring a larger population into the outdoor space,” Ganey said. “We’re never going to say no to someone wanting to get into the outdoors; we think that’s probably one of the most healthy and best choices people can make. Especially as we’ve seen the last couple years with the global pandemic.”
