10 ways to transform your look for less

If there’s one thing that I’ve learnt over my many years as a fashion editor, it is that the most stylish people are not those that spend thousands on their wardrobes, and who only buy designer clothes.

Being able to afford items that are well-made can help, sure, but true style is about creativity, confidence and attitude. With that in mind, here are a few simple style lessons that I’ve learnt along the way – including from a few of my stylish friends and colleagues – that can help transform your look for less.

* Save & Splurge: Keep your clothing in order with these handy travel packing cubes
* How Aotearoa dresses: Street style at Auckland Pride’s art scene
* Is the age of the necklace ‘over’?
* Shop: 8 accessories that will instantly update your look

True style isn't about how much you spend.

True style isn’t about how much you spend.

1. Small but mighty

Beauty minis are cute, yes, but can also be more wallet-friendly compared to full-sized products. Chemist Warehouse has a small but well-stocked travel section, while Mecca’s minis and travel size section is definitely worth a peruse (in-store, these items are often near the tills to encourage last minute purchases). It’s a great way to trial beauty products too, to see if they’re worth further investment.

2. Know how to shop chain stores

Fast fashion is not your friend, but for many it is the only way they are able to shop – whether for affordability or accessibility reasons. The key to shopping big chain stores is to know what to look for, and to reject impulse buying that will lead to the ever-growing pile of fashion waste.

Look for fabrics that will last (like 100% cotton, which is not perfect but often better than polyester),

Citing laxity, HC asks I-T to return jewellery seized in 2002, refund tax plus interest | Mumbai News

MUMBAI: The Bombay high court directed the income-tax department to return jewellery seized 21 years ago from a businessman in Pune and refund with additional interest Rs 7 lakh paid as tax over its inaction in the case despite an ITAT order as well as follow up by the family.
I-T had searched Lakhpatrai Agarwal’s house in August 2002 and seized the jewellery after he admitted undisclosed income of Rs 28 lakh. In 2010, the Pune Income Tax Appellate Tribunal (ITAT) directed fresh assessment. After Agarwal died of old age, his legal heir wrote to I-T in March 2018, seeking refund and the return of jewellery as the department had failed to complete the fresh assessment. In July 2022, I-T sent Sunil Agarwal, the heir, a notice about starting the fresh assessment in August. At this, Agarwal moved the high court with his lawyer Sham Walve saying such belated action was time-barred. He pointed at section 153(3) of the I-T Act and said a fresh assessment has to be completed within nine months from the end of the financial year in which the order is received by the commissioner.
I-T, represented by advocate Ajeet Manwani, said it did not receive the 2010 ITAT order and the compliance period does not begin till the order “is received” as mentioned in the I-T Act.
The high court held that a period for receiving the order has to be “reasonable’’. “We are unable to accede to the contention of the (I-T office) to construe the words ‘is received’ in section 153(3) to mean ‘till it is received’ and thereby extend the limitation in perpetuity. It has to be a reasonable period of time, especially when the respondents (Union ministry of finance and income-tax commissioners) are a party to the proceeding,” said a

It’s seller beware when it comes to old gold and jewellery – Kelowna News

Inflation and high interest rates have people looking for money in different ways.

According to Premier Jewellery and Loans in Kelowna, more people seem to be rummaging through old jewellery boxes and stopping by the shop to help make ends meet.

“We have definitely seen a large increase in clients coming in. It could be post Christmas, it could be the effects of inflation or possibly a recession coming. But we have definitely seen an increase,” said owner Martin Strasser.

“You have gold, diamonds or watches sitting in a box and now you have a bill that’s due or inflation is hitting you. Your money doesn’t go as far as it used to, so you want to find a way to stretch those dollars.”

Premier Jewellery and Loans loaned Castanet two pieces of jewellery and a gold coin to help in a market assessment of local and pop-up jewellery buyers.

Premier provided a 9.61 gram 10K yellow gold ring, an older style engagement ring with 18K gold and 0.42 carat diamonds and a one ounce Canadian gold coin .

Castanet took the same two rings and the gold coin and had them appraised at Canadian Jewellery Exchange in Kelowna and GLK Gold, a pop-up buyer that visited the city last weekend.

Premier was the only shop aware Castanet was running the story at the time appraisal.

Jewellery Exchange offered a comparative appraisal to Premier and was open about the engagement ring‘s potential lack of movement in consignment.

Jewellery Exchange appraiser Mark Schlitt said in an interview afterwards every shop has different interests.

“Premier might have a different clientele for jewellery than we do. In their case they may have a buyer for a certain piece or we may have a buyer for a certain piece

Divya Agarwal returns ex-boyfriend Varun Sood’s ‘khandani’ jewellery

Mumbai: Divya Agarwal surprised everyone last year by announcing her breakup with Varun Sood. The actress, who won Bigg Boss OTT, has moved on for good and is all set to tie the knot with fiance Apurva Padgaonkar soon. However, it is her past that has crept back and made her retort to some of the accusations that have been levelled against her publicly.

It started a few days ago when Varun did a Q&A session with fans on Twitter wherein he was asked if he cheated on Divya. He replied, “I didn’t bro.” Next was Varun’s sister Akshita who alleged that Divya had not returned their family jewellery. The controversial tweets were deleted later.

However, Divya noticed them and replied sternly. She began with the tweet, “I’m going to speak … very soon ❤️” And when someone called her ‘attention seeker’, she replied, “Yeah wanted that attention from him, I didn’t get hence left …”

And after the jewellery claims by Varun’s sister, Divya tweeted, “Omg not just that. Take it all!! It was anyway about give and take…but can someone stop talking as they get attention from it on news portals!”

On Thursday (Feb 23), Divya tweeted a photo of the jewellery and wrote, “Giving back the ‘jewellery’😂” Not just this, in another post, she shared that she is also sending some ‘kisses’ chocolates with it.

Looking at this, a fan reminded her how Varun had also given her his jersey on Ace Of Space. But Divya told him, “That jersey was just on the show… he took it back just after we came out of the house 😂”

To a fan, Divya also revealed, “Na kabhi pehna na kabhi maanga. Ek saal baad yaad aaya.” The reality show star also added indirectly how Varun and his sister

It’s a sell-out: Industry mood positive ahead of Australian Jewellery Fair

For the second consecutive year the Australian Jewellery Fair (AJF) has sold out far in advance of opening day.

The AJF will be hosted at the International Convention Centre in Sydney’s Darling Harbour on 18-19 March.

The AJF has been timed to take place prior to Mother’s Day (14 May), giving retailers the opportunity to stock the latest ranges ahead of a crucial period of trading.

Three major buying groups – Nationwide Jewellers, Independent Jewellers Collective, and Leading Edge Jewellers – will each host stands after a productive Melbourne Jewellery Expo, which was also a sell-out event. The GAA will also be at the event.

Expertise Events managing director Gary Fitz-Roy told Jeweller that the most valuable thing available at the AJF for suppliers and retailers alike would be ‘opportunity’.

“We are thrilled to see such a high level of interest in the Australian Jewellery Fair this year. We’ve been anticipating a high turnout, but didn’t expect it would sell out so quickly,” Fitz-Roy said.

“We are confident that the fair will provide a valuable opportunity for retailers and sellers to discover new ranges, to build connections, and to reconnect within the industry.”

Fitz-Roy explained that a new initiative had been introduced for AJF: “The fair will also feature free all-day catering, so retailers and sellers can maximise their time and enjoy a free lunch. This is just one of the ways we are working to make the fair an enjoyable and productive experience for everyone involved”.

For additional information or to register in advance visit the Australian Jewellery Fair website.

10 Ways To Clean With Dish Soap That Go Way Beyond Plates And Bowls

Getty Images

While we most often associate dish soap with cleaning our everyday dinnerware, favorite wine glasses, and fine china, this product’s power expands way beyond the reaches of the kitchen sink. In fact, as dish soap has become more regulated and safer over the years, thanks to the elimination of phosphates and other harsh chemicals from most formulations, its high-performing capabilities have become available to more and more areas of the home for safe, efficient cleaning. Here, you’ll find 10 clever uses for dish soap that can solve everyday problems in an instant.

Restore your jewelry’s sparkle.

Dish soap is the ideal at-home cleaning solution for your fine jewelry, according to Coronet Diamonds, as it’s typically gentler than most hand soaps and shampoos. Simply rinse your pieces and place them in a solution of mild dish soap and warm water, letting them soak for 15 minutes. From there, use a clean toothbrush to remove any lingering stains and wipe off with a clean cotton cloth to dry and remove any excess oil. You won’t believe how shiny your engagement ring looks without a trip to the jeweler or buying a special cleaning solution.

Freshen up your pet supplies—but not your pet.

Everyday germs from the outside world and even pet food can contaminate your dog’s bowls, toys, and habitats. The CDC recommends using a solution of dish soap and water to clean everything from crates and bowls to rubber and plastic pet toys. You may need to go one step further and disinfect using beach or a designated spray afterwards to fully kill germs, especially if your pet has recently been sick.

Replace your floor cleaning solution (except if you have hardwoods).
