Bridal makeup 101: Kiara Advani’s makeup artist reveals how she gets the perfect base

Hugs, kisses, sweets and tears–makeup goes through a lot on the wedding day. And for bridal makeup to last the whole event and the emotions it brings, you need a perfect base.

“For brides-to-be, the skin definitely needs to be prepped way in advance and taken very good care of to make sure that it feels and looks naturally plush and hydrated. Be it bridal or any other event, the base has to be impeccable, and only then can one do justice to the eye makeup and the rest. My go-to mantra is less is more. Indian brides spend a lot of time in front of the fire, so the makeup should not be a hindrance. It should be as light as possible and totally waterproof as you can’t do touchups in between pheras,” says celebrity makeup artist Lekha Gupta, who created the dreamy bridal makeup looks of actor Kiara Advani this month.

How deep is your base?

Depending on the skin type, Gupta likes to shift between massages, rollers, icing or sheet masks for prep. And not just on D-day, she suggests that you indulge in these rituals months in advance. On the day, a bit of icing before makeup always helps. Her next important step is a primer, which serves as an additional layer of protection while providing adherence to makeup products. For extremely dry skin, use a hydrating moisturizer or primer. Even oil helps, Gupta’s favourite is the Danessa Myricks beauty oil. For oily skin, you will need mattifying primers and moisturizers. “We also sometimes use a pore filler as a primer to ensure the skin looks velvety smooth, especially for brides who have visible open pores. A lip balm can prep the lips. I don’t always use an eye primer. Instead, I use a nude

4 beauty trends you can buy from the runways

Some of the makeup trends on the runways at Milan Fashion Week F/W 2023.

— Recommendations are independently chosen by Reviewed’s editors. Purchases you make through the links below may earn us and our publishing partners a commission.

In a nutshell, Milan Fashion Week took a simple stance on beauty. The primary hairstyles of choice consisted of the slicked-back bun and pin-straight hair, but the makeup looks offered more variety. From the heavily-lined eyes at Etro to the pastel-tonal eyelashes at Prada, Milan’s beauty looks offered makeup inspiration that you may want to try this year.

Make smart choices without hours of googling. Subscribe to The Checklist newsletter for expert product advice and recommendations.

1. Colorful eyelashes at Prada

Models at Prada—including Gigi Hadid and Kendall Jenner (left to right)—strutted down the runway wearing colorful eyelashes.

Prada took a minimalistic approach to makeup—except when it came to the lashes. Models wore a medley of pastel colors, such as pink, light blue and yellow. We’re assuming the models wore pairs of false eyelashes, but to create a similar look, consider trying a tinted mascara. To pull inspiration from Gigi Hadid’s pink lashes, reach for a warm-toned mascara, such as the Dior Diorshow Iconic Overscurl Mascara in “664 Brique” (brick red). The formula also promises to deliver “spectacular curl and volume.”

Meanwhile, if you’re aiming to achieve Kendall Jenner’s blue-tinted lashes, we recommend going with the Reviewed-approved Thrive Causemetics Liquid Lash Extensions Mascara in “Nola” (deep blue). Our tester, Brigitt Earley, commended the formula for providing “dramatic length, definition and curl that instantly creates the look of lash extensions.” She says two coats is all you need to get a pair of lashes that could easily compete with falsies.

2. “No-makeup makeup” at Tod’s

Models at Tod's—including Irina Shayk (left)—seemingly embraced a "no-makeup makeup" look.

Tod’s seemed to call for fresh, bare faces at its fall/winter 2023 runway show. To recreate the look at home, we recommend starting with a rich moisturizer to give

The Secrets Behind Keke Palmer’s No-Makeup Makeup in ‘Nope’

Typically, sci-fi movies with aliens and UFOs conjure images of green face makeup and obscure special effects. But Jordan Peele’s new release, Nope, a follow-up to his award-winning films Get Out and Us, is anything but your average alien film.

Starring Daniel Kaluuya and Keke Palmer, the film follows Otis and Emerald, siblings who see a mysterious UFO in the sky. (The rest is, well, hard to put into words.) The movie has received praise for Peele’s uniquely complex, sci-fi-thriller tone, and the makeup feels just as novel—especially for Palmer’s character.

“We wanted to take away the Keke that everyone knows to make her Emerald,” Tym Buacharern, the film’s makeup artist, tells BAZAAR.com. “We still gave her a little contour here and there, because it’s pretty. But we needed her to look as natural as possible for this character. It’s a nice departure from what people see of her. Keke loved it so much, she continued the natural makeup even after we filmed the movie.”

Ahead, find out more about how makeup helped develop the characters in one of the biggest films of the year.

Skin Prep Was Key

Ironically, achieving the no-makeup makeup look requires a lot of prep and products, and it took about 45 minutes each day. Making sure the skin has a hydrated, smooth canvas is a critical first step. Palmer has been vocal about her struggles with acne, so Buacharern used the CurrentBody LED Light Mask, which kills bacteria and has anti-inflammatory healing properties, to help the actress keep her breakouts at bay.

“Our filming location was in California, so we were in the midst of dust, rain,

From major trends to micro trends, we have seen them come and go during the pandemic. It’s the chunky and playful accessories to the minimalist jewelry we had a joy in layering. It has been a rollercoaster of a ride with jewelry but if there’s one thing for sure, wearing them gives a boost of confidence.

It’s the feeling of being empowered that Karat World recognises and has been advocating for 30 years. A romantic timeless piece that gives a sense of empowerment to the people who wear their jewelry. With their dedication to search for the best, it is no surprise that they offer a range of trendy pieces to classic ones. And with that, they gave us some tips that can elevate your look for the day.

Match it with your skin tone

Different metals can accentuate your skin. For those who have morena skin tones, you can’t go wrong with the classic gold for that extra glow. But if you’re leaning towards a fairer skin tone, yellow or white gold will make your skin look radiant.

Mix and match

Wearing different metals is now the modern and chic way of elevating your look. Don’t hesitate to pair your silvers and gold when you layer them or when you opt for a statement piece.

It’s all about the neckline

When it comes to neck pieces, your neckline is your best guide. A V-neck top is best paired with a piece that follows the fall. And for square necklines, opt for a piece that falls by your collarbones.

Consider the occasion

There are a whopping 30 shades to choose from, which take into account undertones. That’s more than when usually see for a shade-forgiving skin tint that has long-wearing, buildable light-medium coverage. (Foundation is different, of course. We expect 40+ shades in that case!) This ensures the perfect match you’ll wear all the time — summer and beyond.

While I prefer to focus on what’s inside a makeup product instead of what isn’t, Tula has the list of “nos” you might be looking for. I especially like that this formula is fragrance-free and formulated without dairy, gluten, parabens, sulfates (SLS and SLES), phthalates, mineral oil and petrolatum. It’s also cruelty-free so bunnies are safe here.
