8 Denim Styling Ideas That Come Street Style-Approved

When looking through the latest batch of street style imagery, I find that I’m drawn to outfits that look like something I would wear for a coffee in the park or to meet friends for lunch, instead of anything too “fashion”. Rather than an overly considered “look”, these outfits are centred around elevated basics and, almost always, include denim as the base.

There is a definite feeling of nostalgia when it comes to denim trends this year, with a return to ’70s flares and denim maxi skirts from the ’90s. Nothing is too fitted or close to the body – jeans all have slouch and a baggy silhouette and denim skirts have an A-line silhouette that skim the hips. It’s no coincidence that one of the most hyped catwalk images of the spring/summer 2023 season was Kate Moss at Bottega Veneta wearing a pair of “anti-fit” jeans, with a checked shirt and tank top. This simple approach to styling is certainly having a moment.

When it comes to styling ideas, there’s been lots of bomber jackets, leather moto jackets and trench coats at fashion month. What the seven looks below all have in common is a sense of ease and comfort. One of my favourite looks was stylist Shiona Turini wearing denim cargo pants with a cropped white turtleneck and checked coat. Lucy Williams, meanwhile, dressed up her baggy jeans and chunky loafers with an impeccable ivory textured coat by London label Tove – the jeans were the perfect counterpoint to the more formal structure of the coat.

In need of some new every day outfit ideas? See below for fresh ways to wear in denim in 2023.

75-year-old model shares style tips for staying fashionable at any age

When it comes to staying stylish, age is just a number.

With age comes wisdom, and—in Carolyn Doelling’s case—a savvy sense of style. The 75-year-old model launched her fashion career after retiring from a career that spanned from banking to philanthropy, and now appears in campaigns for CVS, Athleta and more. Her newfound passion has changed the course of her life—and now she’s on a mission to change the industry.

So, what are we wearing? Subscribe to Reviewed’s weekly Style Check newsletter to get the answers from stylish people.

“I just want to make sure that after the age of 70, women still have their swagger,” she says. We sat down with Doelling to talk runway-ready style, representation and how to find clothes you love at any age.

Reject societal beauty standards

Despite societal pressures, there’s no fashion rulebook for style after 70. After retiring, Doelling realized that “people have a different outlook on what you can accomplish [after a certain age].” When a boutique in Oakland, California asked her to appear in a social media campaign, she found her next chapter and an opportunity to challenge those preconceived notions. Now, in addition to being in front of the camera, she hopes to bring more representation to runways. “A model should represent the real thing, and I think it’s important that the market at large can see that,” says Doelling, whose next goal is to walk in a show at New York Fashion Week. “I think it would do a lot to defy ageism and to encourage older women to feel more included.”
